Imphal: The Yumnam Khemchand Singh-led NDA government won the floor test in the Manipur assembly on Thursday. Yumnam moved the motion of confidence in the presence of MLAs from the valley and Naga inhabited areas with some of them participating virtually.

Kuki Zo groups continued their opposition to Kuki MLAs joining the new government. A community organisation has called for a total shutdown in Kuki Zo inhabited areas on Friday. On Thursday, there was protest in Kuki Zo areas against Nimcha joining the government. On Wednesday night, a group of Kuki Zo people staged a protest in New Delhi against the MLAs who took part in the government formation.

An armed group released a video threatening Kuki Zo MLAs asking them not to join the government.

Khemchand belongs to the Metei community. Nemcha Kipgen, a Kuki-Zo MLA of BJP from Kangpokpi, took oath as deputy chief minister virtually from Delhi. A senior BJP leader, who did not want to be identified said, “Assessing the threat, Kipgen took oath from New Delhi virtually. Since May 3, 2023, the Kuki and Meteis have not visited each other’s areas. Kuki MLAs have not visited Imphal since violence broke out.”

Khemchand said he will speak to the Director General of Police over threats to Kuki Zo MLAs. Additional security personnel have been put in place outside the residence of Kuki MLAs in Churachandpur and Kangpokpi.

The ten Kuki Zo tribal MLAs, including seven BJP MLAs, along with all the leading organisations of the community, have been demanding a separate administration or a Union territory for the tribals in Manipur.

The Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM) had rejected the formation of any popular government. KIM stated that, “such a government will be nothing more than a Meitei-centric political arrangement, incapable of delivering peace, justice, or reconciliation. On the contrary, it will only embolden the state machinery to continue its agenda of domination, persecution, and systematic subjugation of the Kuki Zo people.”

“Any Kuki Zo MLA who chooses to disregard the collective decision taken at the Lungthu meeting will be doing so in their individual capacity, and KZC shall not be held accountable for the consequences arising from such unilateral decision,” the Kuki Zo Council (KZC) warned.

The KZC said that the Kuki Zo people will not participate in the formation of the government.

On Tuesday night, soon after the announcement of the leader, unidentified gunmen fired several rounds in the air in Churachandpur.
