NEW DELHI: Even as the Lok Sabha continued to be adjourned on Thursday without taking up the YSR Congress-TDP MPs’ no-confidence motion against the central government, MPs from both parties filed fresh notices for the motion to be taken up on Friday.

A group of TDP MPs met Speaker Sumitra Mahajan on Thursday and demanded that she take up their no-confidence motion immediately and start the debate in the House.

Talking to the media, TDP MPs led by YS Chowdary said they had pointed out to the Speaker that even though some MPs were protesting in the House, more than the minimum required number of 50 MPs belonging to many parties have been standing up to support their motion.

They told the Speaker that she could either count the number of MPs standing up in support of the motion and admit it overlooking the protests by the AIADMK-TRS MPs, or call an all-party meeting to gauge the support for their no-confidence motion.

The YSR Congress-TDP MPs have been pushing for a no-confidence motion to protest against the Centre for nonimplementation of the promised Special Category Status for Andhra Pradesh.

An overwhelming number of Opposition parties, including the Congress, have backed the move with a different calculation.

These Opposition parties think that once the no-confidence motion is admitted, they can use the preceding debate in the House to criticise the NDA government on many counts besides using the opportunity to raise issues such as Nirav Modi-PNB fraud case, question the Rafale fight jet deal with France, raise the issue of farmers’ distress and unemployment among the youth among other issues. The Speaker has not entertained the motion on the ground that a no-confidence motion can’t be take up for consideration “when the House is not in order”.
