Yousaf Gilani takes oath as Pakistan Prime Minister
Newly-appointed Pakistan Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani took oath of office and secrecy at the Presidency in Islamabad on Tuesday.
President Pervez Musharraf administered the oath to Gilani at 12:38 pm.
More than 500 invitations were sent to all the important political and other personalities, including PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif, his brother Shahbaz Sharif and PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari.
However, Nawaz Sharif had announced that he would boycott the swearing-in ceremony of Pakistan's new prime minister to protest against Pervez Musharraf's presence whom he has called "an illegal and unconstitutional" President.
The National Assembly on Monday elected PPP's Gilani as the new Prime Minister of Pakistan with a thumping majority.
Gilani bagged 264 votes. The rival candidate Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi of the PML-Q and its allies secured only 42 votes.
The National Assembly has total strength of 342 members, but its existing strength is 330 as 12 seats are vacant.
On Monday, Pakistan's deposed Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry made his first public appearance in four months after the country's newly-elected premier ordered judges detained by President Pervez Musharraf to be freed.
