Young lawyers unaware of respectful drill for sacrifices during freedom struggle

Every year on January 30, SC comes to a halt for paying homage to all those who sacrificed their lives during the freedom struggle, including Mahatma Gandhi who was assassinated that day. As siren goes off, all court work halts and judges, lawyers and staff stand in silence. The nextgen lawyers often disturb the solemnity by quizzing if the alarm was for some fire outbreak or quake. Surely, an awkward moment for those trying to stay rooted.



In chaste Hindi
Afghan foreign minister cochair for Heart of Asia had to depart early along with his President and could not address joint presser with Arun Jaitley. Afghan deputy foreign minister Hekmat Karzai, who stood in for his senior, however, did not disappointment. Beginning his comments in chaste Hindi, Hekmat surprised scribes from India and abroad at the press meet.



CJI beside ailing mother
Note recall, BCCI and a host of other cases got knocked off SC business list on Monday since CJI TS Thakur was not available in court. Thakur’s mother has been ailing for long and so the CJI was not available in the court’s last working fortnight this year. The court will break for its winter recess on December 17 and will open on January 2. Thakur demits office on January 3 when he hands over the baton to Justice JS Khehar.



A dalit yatra for Congress
Congress is a little nervous about its 50-day Dalit yatra ‘Shiksha-Suraksha-Swabhiman’, which was flagged off on Sunday in poll-bound Uttar Pradesh. It is Congress’ first such Dalit outreach event in the state, and the first one without political strategist Prashant Kishor at the helm of affairs. A control room has been created to keep a hawk’s eye on the yatra and its success.
