ANI
Guwahati: Assam government informed the assembly on Tuesday that it was yet to examine the Clause 6 panel’s report, which was submitted to the state government in February this year. The Assam Accord’s Clause 6 provides for constitutional, legislative and administrative safeguards to protect the cultural, social, linguistic identity and heritage of the Assamese people.

State’s parliamentary affairs minister Chandra Mohan Patowary, while replying to a question from Nazira MLA Debabrata Saikia, said the process of forming a committee of legal experts to examine the report was on. The process was delayed due to Covid-19, he said.

On August 11, the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) had made the report’s recommendations public. The 14-member panel, which was headed by Justice (retd) Biplab Kumar Sarma, had submitted the report to chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who had received it on behalf of Union home minister Amit Shah. Shah, Sonowal and state finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had discussed the report in September in New Delhi.
