Yechury meets Sonia; seeks urgent steps to curb inflation
A day after threatening the ruling coalition with dire consequences if it failed to check the spiralling prices, Sitaram Yechury met UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and sought urgent steps by the govt to curb inflation.
Yechury is also understood to have discussed the nuclear issue at his one-on-one meeting with Gandhi, though details of the discussion were not available.
A meeting of the UPA-Left Committee would be held later this month during which the government is expected to brief the Left parties on the negotiations with the IAEA on India-specific safeguards.
During his meeting with Gandhi, Yechury reiterated the demands of the Left parties and the UNPA to curb the rising prices, sources said.
The meeting came a day after the UNPA and the Left parties announced their proposed nationwide agitation against the government on the issue.
The CPI(M) Politburo member had met External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee yesterday and discussed various issues which the Left parties want to be raised in Parliament, which resumes after the recess on April 15.
At its recently-concluded Party Congress, the CPI(M) had demanded withdrawal of a legislation which would allow FDI in the commodities market and warned that the Left would oppose the Bill if it was brought to Parliament.
The party had also sought reversal of "neoliberal" economic policies which, it said, had led to the burgeoning prices, deepened the agrarian crisis, weakened the public distribution system and led to high cost imports of foodgrains.
