GREATER NOIDA: Come December 15, the speed limit on the Yamuna Expressway, which sees a high number of accidents, will be brought down from 100kmph to 80kmph. For heavy vehicles, the maximum speed has been reduced from 80kmph to 60kmph.

During winter, speed reduction is a usual procedure on the expressway. With dense fog expected in the coming days, the current restrictions will remain in place till February 15.

Officials said directions in this regard were issued to the Jaypee concessionaire by Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) CEO Arunvir Singh on Tuesday. “Since fog affects driving in the night and pileups have often been witnessed due to that, the speed limit will be reduced,” a senior YEIDA official said, adding that pamphlets will be used to make commuters aware about the restrictions.

The official said that concessionaire representatives will use hand-held devices to make announcements to the commuters. “Between the toll plazas, the stretches are not all lit up. Hence, announcements will be made at a distance of 100 metres from the queue of commuters. Reflector tapes will also be pasted on vehicles that don’t have them,” he said, adding that tea will be arranged at the toll plazas for commuters.

Two days ago, a private bus travelling on the wrong side hit a tempo on the service road of the expressway, killing its driver. Three other people were injured. In another accident the same day, 10 vehicles, including a roadways bus and cars, crashed into each other due to poor visibility.
