Yakub Memon execution: Maharashtra government waits for SC verdict, ready for hanging

MUMBAI: Even as the state home department has almost completed the preparations for hanging Yakub Memon, it is awaiting the outcome of the fresh appeal filed by him before the Supreme Court.

“We were expecting the disposal of the appeal today , however, in view of the differences between the two judges, now the appeal has been referred to a larger bench," said a senior bureaucrat.

If the apex court dismisses the appeal, then it will have to take immediate steps to implement the order passed by the special court. “In that event also, we will have to take note of the mercy petition pending before the governor, since so far the Raj Bhavan has taken the stand that it will wait for the outcome of the appeal pending before the apex court," said the bureaucrat.

Additional chief secretary K P Bakshi said, “if the decision of the special court is not stayed, we will follow the normal procedure and if the order is stayed, we will abide by the order of the Supreme Court".
