NEW DELHI: The vocal Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee stunned the Lok Sabha when she mistakenly credited Rabindranath Tagore as the poet who penned the national song ‘Vande Mataram’.
Ms Banerjee, who sought to intervene over the issue of singing of ‘Vande Mataram’ in schools on September 7, said: “Vande Mataram is our national song. It is written by Rabindranath Tagore.”The remark was initially not heard by many due to the general uproar. However, she requested Speaker Somnath Chatterjee for “a minute” to intervene on the issue and again named Tagore as the author of ‘Vande Mataram’.
While other MPs sat stunned, Prabodh Panda of the CPI said: “It is not written by Tagore. He has written our national anthem (Jana Gana Mana) and Vande Mataram was written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee.”
