Work on Yamuna interceptor sewers underway: Government

NEW DELHI: About 65 per cent of a project aimed at preventing the pollution of Yamuna river through the laying of interceptor sewers has been completed, Rajya Sabha was informed today.

In a reply in the Upper House, Minister of State for Water Resources, Santosh Kumar Gangwar, said that work is underway to lay interceptor sewers along the three major drains (Najafgarh, Supplementary and Shahdara) of the Yamuna to intercept sewage from unsewered areas through subsidiary small storm-water drains.

These will carry the sewage to the nearest sewage treatment plant, thus ensuring that only treated effluent is discharged into these three major drains, he said, adding that 65 per cent of the work has been completed.

He said that steps are also being taken to revive the interceptor sewer between Aruna Nagar II Cluster up to the outfall of Khyber Pass Drains and to intercept Metcalf House, Qudesia, Mori Gate, Tonga Stand, Civil Military drains at the existing Ring Road Trunk sewer, which has been rehabilitated under the Yamuna Action Plan-II.

"Action plan for provision of sewerage facilities in unsewered areas (around 45 per cent) has been finalised and work will be carried out in a phased manner, depending upon the technical feasibility and availability of funds," Gangwar added.
