Work apace on re-alignment of fence along IB in Jammu
Border Security Force troops have vigorously undertaken re-alignment of nearly 41 kilometres of fence and dismantling of protection bund near the international border in Jammu, BSF officials said on Saturday.
"The main objective behind this is to enable our troops move forward and keep a close watch along the IB and also enable the farmers to cultivate their land," an official said.
Of the 191 kilometres of border from Kathua to Akhnoor in Jammu, the fence for 150-km area was erected about 100 to 150 metres behind the zero line, they said adding, however, at places vulnerable to Pakistani firing, covering nearly 41 kms, it was put up about 500 metres to 1.5 km behind the zero line.
While fencing work was on in 2000, there was continuous firing from Pakistani side due to which a protection bund was raised to avoid casualties, the officials said.
The BSF had raised mounds and set up observation posts but the land behind the bund gave tactical advantage to militants to stealthily watch movements on this side.
Re-alignment work has already been completed for 12-km area and the fence brought to 100 metres from the zero line.
Director General of BSF A K Mitra, who yesterday visited a forward post at Samba sector where an infiltration bid led to a sustained gunfight on May 8, said after re-aligning of the fence, bund would be erected near it to have a clear vision of the areas lying ahead.
