With Raja, spectrum back to haunt House
Bitterness in relations between two Dravidian outfits in Tamil Nadu, DMK and AIADMK, found its echo in Lok Sabha on Friday when members belonging to two parties entered into a slanging match.
AIADMK MP Thambi Durai started off by alleging that the Lok Sabha polls were "neither free nor fair," and proceeded to find fault with the EVMs. Having done this, he resorted to his party's pet theme that of poking fun at the family politics being played out within DMK. At this juncture, the DMK members protested, seeking the presiding officers intervention to direct AIADMK to speak on the Presidential address.
Senior Congress leader P C Chacko, who was on the chair, saw merit in the demand, and asked Mr Durai to speak on the subject. "Or else, I'll be forced to give a ruling," he said.
Undeterred, Mr Durai then spoke about the large scale irregularities in the 3G spectrum allocation. "It's the mother of all scandals. The prime minister should intervene and cancel the allocation," he said, amidst protests from the DMK members.
Mr Durai was referring to the controversy surrounding the 3G spectrum allocation, made during A Rajas tenure as the communication and IT minister during the previous government.
The DMK members, who were on their feet, sought Mr Chackos intervention again, but the latter did not oblige them this time round.
The sparring between the two Dravidian outfits is likely to be a recurring feature in this Lok Sabha, given the hostile relations between them. AIADMK had drawn a blank in the previous Lok Sabha, allowing DMK to have a free run in the House. With Ms Jayalalithaa's party winning eight seats in the just-concluded general election, the situation is going to change now.
