With CBI’s questioning session looming, Raja meets doctors

According to sources, Raja saw his doctor in the evening just when TV channels were feverishly claiming, wrong as it transpired, of Raja having meeting with the CBI.

NEW DELHI: With a looming session with CBI and mounting evidence of his family members allegedly benefitting from the 2G scam, former telecom minister A Raja on Friday met his doctors.

According to sources, Raja saw his doctor in the evening just when TV channels were feverishly claiming, wrong as it transpired, of Raja having meeting with the CBI.

Raja’s session with his doctor came on a day when investigators said kickbacks from the scam were routed through tax havens to India and among its beneficiaries were his close relatives. When TOI contacted the former minister, Raja said he was in a meeting with his doctors, and refused to discuss any of the allegations.

CBI sources said their officials were busy compiling a questionnaire for the former minister, who is to be summoned any time now. “It is just a matter of time,” one source said.

The agency said CBI officials were also grilling Raja’s former private secretary R K Chandolia and senior telecom official A K Srivastava. CBI had raided several premises in Delhi and Chennai, including Raja’s residence in Chennai and Delhi on Wednesday. CBI DIG and spokesperson Binita Thakur denied that Raja has been questioned so far. “We have not questioned the former minister so far and no summons has been issued in his name,” said Thakur.

Officials said the seized documents were being examined as they wanted to question Raja at length.

“We are in the process of analyzing the documents, based on which the questions will be put to the former minister. This will be completed in a few days as voluminous records and files are to be examined. We have also questioned all four senior bureaucrats whose houses were raided. They have provided us with their statements and based on these statements, we plan to question Raja,” said a senior CBI official.
