Will Yesudas make it to Guruvayur temple?

The Guruvayur temple authorities will confer on April 26 and 27 on an issue that has on and off irked some sections of believers and non-believers: Whether or not to permit a non-Hindu to enter the temple premises, for worship or otherwise.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: For tens of thousands of the fans of legendary playback singer K J Yesudas, this is one occasion they would seek the Almighty’s direct intervention.

The Guruvayur temple authorities will confer on April 26 and 27 on an issue that has on and off irked some sections of believers and non-believers: Whether or not to permit a non-Hindu to enter the temple premises, for worship or otherwise. On this occasion, whether or not to allow Yesudas to have darshan at the temple.

The eight-member temple committee that has the tantri as a permanent member will be seeking divine wisdom on the two days to take an appropriate call on the matter, but in reality, they would be between the devil and the deep sea.

On one side, they have Kerala’s minister for temples G Sudhakaran who finds nothing wrong in granting admission to all devotees to the temple, and on the other they have the purists who affirm that the entry of non-Hindus is such a no-no that even calls for purification rites.

To add to the irony, Yesudas means a servant of Jesus. And the national-award winning singer has perhaps rendered the most number of devotional songs to Guruvayurappan, the deity of the temple.

The matter has assumed serious proportions with the minister dashing off a letter to the Guruvayur temple authorities to grant permission to Yesudas to visit the temple and also organise a musical event in his honour on an appropriate date. Yesudas has told the media that his personal opinion is that all devotees should be allowed to worship at all places of worship.

The Guruvayur temple managing committee chairman Thottathil Ravindran also feels quite the same. But getting his fellow committee members to toe that line, point out observers, could be a difficult proposition, considering the history of the temple that is deeply rooted in tradition.

In the meantime, both supporters and opponents of Yesudas’ temple entry are left with the question whether music has any religion.
