Rajkhowa took over as the state’s Governor onMay 12, 2015. For a brief period he was out of state on health grounds.

Rajkhowa said, "I received a call from a private person in Guwahati on August 29 to put in papers assuring me I will suitably accommodated in a constitutional post." He added, "I got in touch with Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, who confirmed that the government is happy with my work. I also got in touch with Union minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju.

The junior minister said he will find out. Rijiju later called to confirm that there was a high-level decision to replace me."

Rijiju is a Lok Sabha member from Arunachal Pradesh. Former chief secretary of Assam Rajkhowa said on September 1, the Home Secretary confirmed that the decision to replace him has been taken.
