‘Will quit in 2027': Jagdeep Dhankhar's old video goes viral talking about 'divine intervention’
Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar unexpectedly resigned on Monday, citing medical reasons, cutting short his term which was to end in August 2027. His decision, effective immediately, was conveyed in a letter to President Murmu, triggering immediate...

In his resignation letter addressed to President Droupadi Murmu, Dhankhar wrote, "To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as vice-president of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution."
The 74-year-old leader assumed office in August 2022, with his term originally set to continue until August 2027. Apart from serving as the Vice-President, Dhankhar also held the crucial post of Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. His resignation came on the opening day of the Monsoon session, adding a layer of surprise to the day’s proceedings.
Soon after the news broke, an old video began circulating on social media, drawing fresh attention. In the clip, Dhankhar is heard saying during an event at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on July 10, "I will retire at the right time, August 2027, subject to divine intervention." The timing and content of the statement have now led to increased speculation and commentary online.
With his departure, Dhankhar becomes only the third Vice-President in Indian history to resign while still in office. Before him, V V Giri and R Venkataraman had stepped down from the post to run for the presidency.
