Why did PM remain slave for 4 yrs: CPM

In his reply to no-confidence motion, tabled in Parliament on Tuesday, the prime minister had said that he was not willing to accept the Left’s veto on important policy issues.

NEW DELHI: A day after the Prime Minister displayed an itch to get personal with his rivals LK Advani and Prakash Karat the BJP leader by name and the other indirectly the CPM hit back and said that Mr Manmohan Singhs personality transformed only after the Congress managed the numbers through dubious means.

In his reply to no-confidence motion, tabled in Parliament on Tuesday, the prime minister had said that he was not willing to accept the Lefts veto on important policy issues. All I had asked our Left colleagues was: please allow us to go through the negotiating process and I will come to Parliament before operationalising the nuclear agreement. This simple courtesy which is essential for orderly functioning of any government worth the name, particularly with regard to the conduct of foreign policy, they were not willing to grant me. They wanted a veto over every single step of negotiations which is not acceptable. They wanted me to behave as their bonded slave, he had said.

Responding to the prime ministers statement that the Left treated him as a bonded salve, CPM polit bureau member Brinda Karat said the prime minister was quite comfortable listening to the Left when its support was critical for clinging to power. Why did he agree to be a bonded slave for 4 years and two months. Was it for holding on to power, Ms Karat asked. In a scathing attack, Ms Karat said the prime ministers personality transformation came only after he was convinced that his party and his new allies would employ every trick in their quiver to arrange the numbers for meeting the deficit. He has now quit being a bonded slave because he could prove his governments majority by using black money, the CPM leader said.

Ms Karats colleagues, who were equally livid, said the prime minister has been using newspaper columns to attack the Left. If he was not willing to accept our viewpoint on governance, why did he occupy the chair this long. His conscience revolted only when he knew his new friends have the ability to buy MPs, they said.
The prime minister had virtually put every reform initiative on the backburner under pressure from the Leftists. His assertions against large and untenable subsidy bill and other populist measures were just subjects of his speech at business club meetings.
