Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Monday said whether the lockdown would end on April 14 or not depended on how well people respected it and stayed indoors.

He put out an appeal on Monday urging people to respond to the government's efforts to fight the spread of covid-19.

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself has apologized and said that "lockdown was an inevitable step taken by the government to protect people from the pandemic". We have to realize the predicament of a prime minister who always cares for the well being of the country and it's people," he said in his statement.

When the performance of developed countries on this front was miserable, Modi's precautionary measures were yielding results, the chief minister said.

"At this hour of crisis, it is not good on our part to come out of houses and violate the curfew. Ending of lockdown depends on strictness with which one follows the curfew and maintains the social distance. If one follows the curfew strictly, lockdown period will automatically end on April 14 and if not, government will be forced to review the situation. Whether to end the lock down or not is in your hands."

"It has come to our notice that people in some urban centres are brazenly violating curfew rules and are forcing the police to act. Police are also human beings like us and don't test their patience. Already our police are under stress as they are working without any rest. Don't force them to use force and later blame them for the stern action," Yediyurappa said.

"(the) Government has taken all measures to maintain the supply of essentials and food to the needy. My sincere appeal at this juncture to people is abide by government's decision by staying back at your houses," his statement further said.
