West Bengal hands over 1,024 acres to BSF for fencing along India-Bangladesh border

Kolkata: The West Bengal government has completed the handover of 1,024.75 acres to the Border Security Force (BSF) for border fencing along 172.6 km since the BJP came to power in the state on May 4.

"Ensuring national security and strengthening our borders is a top priority for our government. In our commitment to securing the India-Bangladesh border, we have expedited the land transfer process to the Border Security Force (BSF) for the construction of essential fencing. As of today, a total of 1,024.75 acres of land spanning across 172.6 kms has been formally handed over for this purpose," West Bengal CM Suvendu Adhikari said in a post on X.




Around 600 km of the India-Bangladesh border across 10 districts of West Bengal remained unfenced when the new BJP government came to power in May after defeating the Trinamool Congress.

Adhikari pointed out that the largest land transfer was in Murshidabad, where 337 acres were handed over for 45.4 km of fencing. This was followed by North 24 Parganas, where 241.03 acres were transferred for 42.07 km, Cooch Behar with 135.33 acres for 39.39 km, Malda with 176.78 acres for 20.15 km, and Nadia with 95.11 acres for 14.79 km of fencing.

Meanwhile, in a bid to reduce man-animal conflict in the state, the CM said a balance must be struck between elephant conservation and development works in the Jangalmahal districts of Jhargram, Paschim Medinipur, Purulia and Bankura.
