West Bengal governor visits EFR headquarters in Salua

KOLKATA: West Bengal governor M.K.Narayanan has described the killings of 24 EFR jawans by Maoists at Silda as a great tragedy and said that the incident was very disheartening to him, as he was a policeman all through his life.

The governor went on a visit to Silda on Friday. He met the families of those 24 EFR jawans gunned down by Maoists at the Silda police camp on February 15. It is learnt that family members of the slain jawans urged the governor to create employment opportunities to atleast one person from each of these families. They also requested the governor to urge the state government to arrange for better security at all the camps and for better positioning of such camps.

Talking to reporters at Salua, the EFR headquarters in the Maoist infested West Midnapore district, the governor said that he had not given any advice to the state government on Operation Green Hunt which is supposed to be launched on March 5.

"Even though I had a talk with chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and senior state police officials, I have not given any suggestion to them. I have my own views on the operation," Mr Narayanan told reporters at Salua. Operation Green Hunt will be launched to curb Maoists across West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand and Orissa.

The governor also held a meeting with the senior police officials of the West Midnapore district during his visit to Salua, the details of which were not divulged. "It is a great loss for us as 24 of the EFR jawans had to sacrifice their lives at the hands of the Maoists," Mr Narayanan said while speaking to the media persons.

Even though the governor said he did not make any effort to assess the post-Silda situation during his visit to Salua, it is expected that he will submit a report to the Centre on the Silda incident, which will help the Union government to understand the ground reality in the Maoist infested West Midnapore district.

Mr Narayanan was accompanied by the director general of police (armed forces), Partha Bhattacharjee. Interestingly, the special IG (EFR), Benoy Chakraborty who had openly criticised the state government on various issues including the government’s decision to set up the Silda EFR camp at a thickly populated area, had also attended the meeting along with other senior police officials on Friday. Mr Chakraborty is currently facing a departmental inquiry for holding a press conference at Salua a few days back in which he had lambasted the state administration.
