The governor has recently said that he will monitor the appointment of the VCs and will take stringent action if necessary.
In yet another slugfest between the Governor and the West Bengal government, Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar on Thursday came out with a list of 24 Universities, claiming that illegal appointment of Vice-Chancellors was done by the Trinamool Congress government.

“VCs of 24 Universities appointed by Mamata Banerjee in disregard of law. These are ex-facie in defiance of specific orders or without approval by Chancellor-the Appointing Authority. These appointments carry no legal sanction and would be forced to take action unless soon recalled,” wrote Dhankhar on Twitter.

The governor has recently said that he will monitor the appointment of the VCs and will take stringent action if necessary.

Dhankhar on Thursday slammed the state government claiming that the 24 universities of the state vice-chancellors were appointed ‘illegally’, at a time when Bratya Basu, the state Education minister, had spoken about removal of Dhankhar as Chancellor of the state universities. .

The state government and the Governor were on loggerheads ever since 2019, after Dhankhar became the Governor. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had on several occasions had written letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi over removal of the Governor over alleged interference in state government’s work.

Trianmool Congress MP Saugata Roy also criticized the Governor, adding that the state government spends money for the functioning of the state universities and the government has the ‘right’ to decide on the vice-chancellors.

“The state government solves the problems whenever there is any problem in the universities and spends huge money on the development of the varsities. Talks are on and soon Dhankhar will be replaced from the Chancellor post,” said Roy.
