West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee asks cops, officials to stay alert to terror threats near border

West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday asked police officials and the administration to stay alert to cross-border terrorism in north Bengal districts which share international borders with Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh.

Banerjee asked the police to stay vigilant, enhance patrolling and not depend completely on BSF. "Stay vigilant and increase patrolling. Though BSF is deployed, the police officers - ICs and OCs should stay vigilant," she said during a high-level review meeting.

"Border areas are very sensitive. A few days back, a person from Sitalkuchi was picked up. He was a farmer, cultivating his own land. When I got the news, we took immediate action, facilitated his bail and brought him back. Such things are happening in the border areas," Banerjee said. She was referring to Ukil Barman, who was nabbed and taken to Bangladesh and recently returned to India by the BGB.
