The state government has initiated a scheme to provide a government job to one family member of a person who lost their life in political violence in the state over the past 25 years.
“One eligible member of the family of a person killed in an incident of political violence occurring on or after 01.01.2001 shall be offered the opportunity of appointment to government service under special dispensation,” a state government notification said.
“The state of West Bengal has witnes- sed numerous incidents of political vio- lence resulting in the loss of human life and in many of those cases the persons killed were the sole breadwinners of their families,” the notification stated.
The scheme will be called the “West Bengal Scheme for Providing Government Employment (Group D Post) to One Eligible Family Member of the Victims Kil- led in Political Violence, 2026”. The scheme will come into force following the official gazette notifi- cation.
The spouse, son, daughter, third-gender child, brother or sister (in cases where the victim was unmarried) will be eligible for the job and may be considered a de- pendent family member.
Bengal has witnessed several incidents of pre-poll, poll-related and post-poll violence during the 2019, 2021 and 2024 elections, including the Lok Sabha polls. Among those killed in such incidents were several BJP workers.
