Week ends on a rainy note

NEW DELHI: It was luckily not a sultry Saturday. A rainfall of 1.6 mm accompanied by a cool breeze brought smiles to the faces of many Delhiites, struck by heat wave for the past few days.

Though the sky was partly cloudy in the afternoon as well, it was only in the evening that the sky suddenly changed colour which soon came alive with lightening. Cool winds were followed by rainfall which lasted over an hour. And if the Met department is to believed Sunday could receive thunderstorms and showers as well.

There was also a two-degree drop in the maximum temperature from that of Friday’s. ‘‘The maximum temperature on Saturday was 38.4 degrees Celsius (three degrees below normal). This was two degrees less than 40.7 degrees Celsius recorded on Friday. The minimum temperature was 26.8 degrees Celsius (one degree below normal) on Saturday,’’ said a Safdarjung Met official.

The Met department added that three upper air cyclonic circulations over Rajasthan, UP and Jammu and Kashmir were responsible for the rain on Saturday. ‘‘This phenomenon will continue and cloudy skies, thunderstorms along with squall are expected on Sunday as well,’’ added the Met official.

Foreign websites also predict pleasant days ahead. Weatherunderground predicts cloudy skies till Tuesday with a maximum temperature of 42 degrees Celsius on Sunday. BBC Weather also predicts a wet Sunday with the maximum temperature of 36 degrees Celsius on Sunday.

‘‘Nothing can be better than rain in summers. The temperatures were really hitting the roof but occasional showers like the one on Saturday evening help in bringing temperatures down,’’said Priya Chopra, who works for a BPO in Gurgaon.
