'We will build on peace': Mufti Mohammed Sayeed at Unified HQ meeting
JAMMU: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed today convened his first meeting of the Unified Headquarters, assuring that his government will build and consolidate on the peace established by the security agencies in the state.

Sayeed, who was accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh, saw various presentations by the security agencies including the Army and intelligence officials.

He took stock of the law and order situation and number of infiltration attempts made by terrorists from across the border since January 21 when the last Unified Headquarters meeting was chaired by Governor N N Vohra.

Unified Headquarters comprises Army, para-military forces, police and state and central intelligence agencies. State Chief Minister is the chairperson of the group with Army Commanders of Srinagar-based 15 Corps and Nagrota-based (Jammu) 16 Corps acting as adviser to the Chief Minister.

During the meeting, Sayeed thanked the security agencies and the army for ensuring smooth conduct of peaceful elections in the state, official sources said.

"You have given us a suitable environment for elections and now its the duty of my government to build on this peace," Sayeed said.

He first informed the top brass of the security agencies about the stitching together of an alliance between his party PDP and BJP and said it did take time but "our aim was to give a strong government to the people," the sources said.

Singh, who represents the BJP, asked about firing from across the border along the international border and rehabilitation activities being carried out for villagers living there.
