WB transport minister on Citu’s IT unit

Mr Chakraborty claimed that most IT professionals, barring a few, were poorly paid and subjected to humiliation at work places.

KOLKATA: West Bengal transport minister and vice-president of CPIM’s trade union arm, Citu, Subhas Chakraborty on Thursday justified Citu’s move to launch a services association in the state IT sector.

Mr Chakraborty claimed that most IT professionals, barring a few, were poorly paid and subjected to humiliation at work places. “Many are being forced to work for 16 to 17 hours a day. None are in a position to protest as they don’t have a platform to protest against such exploitation,” he said.

Asked whether trade unionism would affect work in the state IT sector which had been accorded `priority status’ by chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, Mr Chakraborty said: “Not at all. You will find associations of professionals in countries like US.”

“Trade unionism is the right of the working class and there’s nothing wrong about Citu launching its unit in the state IT sector. It will help professionals realise their demands and force authorities to go by norms and regulations while running IT establishments,” Mr Chakraborty claimed.
