WB govt to oppose entry of MNCs in farming

The West Bengal government will oppose the entry of multinational companies (MNCs) in contract farming and retail marketing sectors in the state, Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said here on Thursday.

JAIPUR: The West Bengal government will oppose the entry of multinational companies (MNCs) in contract farming and retail marketing sectors in the state, Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said here on Thursday.

However, foreign direct investment and private investment for modern technology and employment purposes would be welcomed, Bhattacharjee, also a CPI(M) Politburo member, told reporters here.

There was no difference of opinion between him and the party on the MNC issue, said Bhattacharjee, who visited his Rajasthan counterpart Vasundhara Raje and is scheduled to address a party rally here.

Referring to the Rajasthan Government's decision on setting up Special Economic Zone (SEZs) after acquiring land from farmers along the Jaipur-Ajmer highway, Bhattacharjee said the percentage of newer industries in the SEZ should not be just 35 per cent, but should be raised to 50 per cent as per the area acquired as it would give more job opportunities.

Besides compensation for land, farmers should also be offered a government job, he suggested.

On the Vande Mataram row, he said, it was a famous patriotic song, but said "you can not compell others to sing it. Every one has got a right to sing or not...I am not supporting Muslim Law Board or the BJP on this issue."

CPI(M) has always maintained equidistance from the BJP and the Congress, he remarked, adding, Congress was a party of "big businessmen and landlords."

While the BJP is of same nature or rather following the Congress footprints, the saffron party was trying to create communal divide, Bhattacharjee alleged.
