WB govt deplores Mamata's warcry at Singur

A day after Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee warned of a bloodbath in the event of the displacement of farmers for the Tatas' proposed small car project in Singur.

KOLKATA: A day after Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee warned of a bloodbath in the event of the displacement of farmers for the Tatas' proposed small car project in Singur, the West Bengal government today deprecated the move to politicise issues concerning investment in the state.
"Farmers are being misguided when land is being acquired for the proposed small car project by the Tatamotors, but the state government would not like any trouble to stand in the way of investment," Commerce and Industry minister Nirupam Sen told reporters here.
The Trinamool chief at a rally at Singur in Hooghly district yesterday warned that her party cadres would not sit idle if farmers were forcibly displaced from their land and urged the Tatas to stay off from the area in the interest of the farming community.
Countering the Trinamool chief's charge that the state government offered land at Singur for Tatamotors, the Industry minister said that the Tatas themselves selected the site for the small car project.
"We showed the Tatas sites at Kharagpur, Sanrail, Uluberia, Dankuni, Uttar Howrah, Haldia, Kolaghat, but the managing director of Tatamotors preferred the site at Singur for their small car project," Sen claimed.
Stating that he had discussed the land acquisition issue with the opposition leader, the Singur gram panchayat leader, the local MLA and the Krishi Bachao Committee before going ahead with land acquisition for the project, Sen said there should be no trouble when investment was forthcoming.
