WB calls for compensation for land losers

About 150 farmers on Monday received cheques from the office of the block land reforms officer (BLRO).

KOLKATA: The West Bengal government has started paying off farmers for their land at Singur in Hooghly district. The government is buying the land from the farmers so that it can be given to Tata Motors, which has promised to come up with a small car manufacturing project there. The payment given was by way of compensation for the acquisition.

About 150 farmers on Monday received cheques from the office of the block land reforms officer (BLRO). The farmers belonged to the three mouzas of Khaserbehri, Singherbheri and Bajumelia. On Tuesday, farmers of Gopalnagar mouza are slated to get their cheques, while those of Beraberi mouza will get their payment on Wednesday.

West Bengal land and land reforms minister Abdur Rezzak Mollah said : “We will soon urge the Union government to formulate a uniform rehabilitation package which will be followed throughout the country while paying compensations to land losers.”

Although the payment process itself had gone ahead smoothly, trouble erupted on Monday evening when Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee and party MLA Partha Chatterjee rushed to Singur and held a protest demonstration at the office of the Singur block development officer. Both of them asked farmers not to accept the cheques as the government was not paying them adequately.

The district magistrate of Hooghly, Vinod Kumar, district superintendent of police Supratim Sarkar and a huge contingent of police force have been camping at Singur to maintain law and order and enable the district administration to distribute the cheques to the land losers.
