WB by-elections on Saturday
The CPIM-led Left Front is facing a united opposition this time in the form of a Congress-Trinamool combine.
Whatever the results, it will have no impact at all on the legislative strength of the ruling party, but it’s an interesting tussle nevetheless as people realise it is more of a dead race. The focus therefore, is whether the Buddhadeb magic will work yet again and CPIM is able to wrest Malda from the Congress and Bongaon from Trinamool.
Interestingly, the chief minister himself had addressed election rallies at both Malda and Bongaon where CPIM’s opposition parties are reportedly throwing a challenge to the ruling Marxists.
“We know that there has been an unofficial electoral adjustment between Congress and Trinamool Congress. Still, we hope to retain the two lok sabha seats of Katwa and Purulia by winning those with a bigger margin this time,” CPIM politburo member and Left Front chairman Biman Bose said.
“Malda belonged to the Congress and Bongaon was won by Trinamool Congress last time. I am not going to predict the results for the two seats. But we are sure to increase our winning margins at both Katwa and Purulia,” Bose said when asked whether his party would be able to wrest Malda and Bongaon on Saturday.
