WB assembly to discuss 12 bills in 9 days
The winter session of the West Bengal legislative assembly, which started on Friday, will discuss 12 Bills in 9 working days.
KOLKATA: The winter session of the West Bengal legislative assembly, which started on Friday, will discuss 12 Bills in 9 working days.
Though the current session is scheduled to close on November 30, members will get only nine working days as the House does not meet on Saturdays and Sundays.
Significantly, no Bill is will be tabled to confer `essential services status’ to the IT sector in West Bengal. Six months ago, the state government had issued an order under the Industrial Disputes Act to treat IT sector as a `public utility service’. That order is valid for six months and expires on November 30. Thereafter, the government will need to issue a fresh order.
However, one of the key Bills expected to be tabled is `The Calcutta Hackney Carriage (Amendment) Bill, 2006’. By tabling this Bill, the state government intends to withdraw handcarts from the city. The Bill was earlier presented to the House, but had been referred to a select committee as opposition parties had raised objections.
The government also intends to increase different allowances and financial benefits being enjoyed by MLAs. For this, the state government will introduce The Bengal Legislative Assembly (Members’ Emoluments) (Amendment) Bill, 2006.
