He surrendered at a Sultanpur court earlier in the day, in a defamation case over remarks made against Union home minister Amit Shah in 2018, but was granted bail.
Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Nyaya Yatra proceeded from Amethi to Raebareli to Lucknow on Tuesday. On his way from Raebareli to Lucknow, Gandhi, while raising issues of unemployment as well as the shortcomings of the Agniveer scheme, said the country's entire defence budget is being pocketed by the Adani group at the expense of privileges that Agniveers should get, He said when he tried to raise this issue in Parliament, he was kicked out and his membership cancelled.
"The defence budget is going into Adani's pockets.... They (the government) are telling Agniveers they won't be accorded a martyr's status and their families will not be helped. What Agniveers should get, Narendra Modi is snatching from them and giving to his friend (Adani)," Gandhi said. "This is what I said in Parliament. You must have seen the speech. I was kicked out of the Lok Sabha and my membership cancelled. The Supreme Court said Rahul Gandhi's membership should be returned. It is then I could go back to Parliament."
