Was Centre sleeping during Assam & WB killings: BJP

The BJP came down heavily on the UPA government for issuing advisories to the Karnataka and Orissa governments and termed it politically motivated and patently discriminatory.

NEW DELHI: The BJP has come down heavily on the UPA government for issuing advisories to the Karnataka and Orissa governments. Describing the move as politically motivated and patently discriminatory, the BJP said that it was the UPA governments belated attempt... to divert the popular attention over its abject failure to take strong and effective measures to contain terrorism in the country.

Criticising the move, Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi said the statement issued by the government to Karnataka and Orissa was part of votebank politics. The Centre has used this political weapon in an attempt to save itself from the simmering anger across the country over terrorism.

Referring to government inaction in Assam when Hindi-speaking residents of the state were being killed by the ULFA and in West Bengal during the episode, BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said that the action was not only an abuse of constitutional provisions but shows rank double standards.

Elaborating on the charge of double standards, the BJP said that the central government did not consider it necessary to issue such warning when the Congress government in Assam failed to provide any security of life to Hindi-speaking people in the state. The party made reference to the Supreme Courts observation when it declared the Illegal Migrants (Determination by Tribunals) Act 1983 (IMDT) as unconstitutional.

The apex court had, making a reference to the Centres powers under Article 355, asked having regard to this constitutional mandate the question arises whether the Union of India has taken any measure for that purpose.

The BJP spokesperson said, Instead of obeying the Supreme Court judgement, the UPA government acted to the contrary and purely for vote bank politics in view of Assam elections, issued Foreigners (Tribunals for Assam) 2006 order, which brought IMDT from the back door. The Supreme Court again quashed the notification and questioned the bonafides of the government.

Highlighting the Congress-led governments hypocrisy, the BJP said that no effort was made to issue strong advisories or directives under Article 355 when the Left, then an UPA partner, unleashed a reign of terror in Nandigram.

Many people were killed in police firing, forcibly driven out of their home by the CPM cadres and even the media was not allowed to enter the area. The nation saw all these repeated excesses on television. Yet, the UPA government never thought of taking any action much less issuing any directive under Article 355, Mr Prasad said.

The targeting and attack on north Indians and Hindi speaking people in Maharashtra and the UPA governments inaction has been attributed by the BJP to the fact that it is a Congress-ruled state. It is obvious that for UPA different rule exist for Congress, CPM and BJP ruled states. This is political hypocrisy and vendetta politics at its worst, Mr Prasad said.
