VK Singh says people who call Army 'Modiji ki sena' are traitors; backtracks later

BJP leader and former Army chief General VK Singh has said that people who termed the Indian Army as ‘Modiji ki Sena’ were traitors. However, he backtracked hours later, after his comments made in an interview to BBC created a controversy.

Singh was responding to a direct question in the interview on what he thought of UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath referring to the armed forces as ‘Modiji ki sena’. The CM’s statement had created an uproar, with opposition parties complaining to the Election Commission, apart from a former service chief. “If someone says that the Indian Army is Modi ji ke Sena, they are not just wrong, they are also traitors. The Army is of India, not of any political party…I don’t know who all are saying this; one or two people, maybe, who have nothing else (to say),” the BJP leader said in the Hindi interview.

Hours later, Singh in a Hindi tweet said his statement was twisted and alleged that the video was spliced to give a wrong meaning. BBC, however, stood by the interview and released the uncut version which had the question asked by its reporter and Singh’s full response, where he mentioned “traitors” for people who term the Indian Army as ‘Modiji ki sena’. The BJP leader did not respond to ET’s questions. BBC is expected to come out with a statement. Its head of Indian languages Rupa Jha tweeted, “it is our duty to ask questions and we will continue doing so.”
