TVK Karur rally stampede: At least 31 feared dead at Vijay’s event; PM Modi expresses grief
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin moved quickly after reports of a tragic crowd surge at actor-politician Vijay’s TVK rally in Karur on September 27, which left at least 36 people, including kids, dead and many others injured. Describing the incident as “deeply concerning,” Stalin directed officials to ensure immediate medical care for the victims.

The rally, led by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay, drew an overwhelming crowd that became uncontrollable as he addressed the gathering. In the chaos, several attendees, including children and party workers, fainted and collapsed.

Taking to X, Stalin said, “The news coming from Karur is deeply concerning. I have instructed former Minister @V_Senthilbalaji, Hon’ble Minister @Subramanian_Ma, and the District Collector to ensure that people who fainted in the crowd and have been admitted to the hospital receive immediate medical treatment.”

He added that Education Minister Anbil Mahesh from Tiruchirappalli would extend assistance “on a war footing” and that he had spoken to the ADGP to stabilise the situation swiftly. Stalin also urged the public to cooperate with doctors and the police. The Chief Minister is expected to visit Karur on Sunday to assess the situation firsthand.

Eyewitnesses said party workers quickly raised an alarm as people began collapsing in the packed gathering. Vijay himself halted his speech, tossing water bottles from the top of his campaign bus to help those in distress.

However, ambulances struggled to navigate through the dense crowd to reach the injured.

Many were eventually rushed to nearby hospitals, with some reported to be in critical condition. Recognising the seriousness of the situation, Vijay cut short his speech before its scheduled end.
