Vice presidential election on August 10

The Election Commission announces the schedule to elect the new vice president.

NEW DELHI: The Election Commission on Thursday announced the schedule to elect a successor to Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat and the poll would be held on August 10.

A notification would be issued on July nine to set the poll process in motion, the EC said.

The counting of votes would take place in the evening on same day soon after the polling is over, it said.

Shekhawat's term ends on August 18 and his successor will have to be in place before that date.

The electoral college for the Vice President consists of members of both Houses of Parliament, in accordance with the proportional representation system. The vote is by means of the single transferable vote and the voting is by secret ballot.
