BANGALORE: Cracking the whip, Karnataka government today transferred Bangalore city Police Commissioner Raghavendra Auradkar in the wake of a series of rape cases, including that of a 6-year-old girl student in a public school.

Auradkar has been transferred with immediate effect and posted as Additional Director General of Police of Karnataka State Reserve Police, a government notification said, with the action coming amid continuing protests over the alleged rape of the girl.

The city police chief had come under severe criticism over the handling of the issue and faced public ire with protesters demanding answers for the delay in arresting the culprits involved in the incident which had evoked public outrage.

The incident at Vibgyor High School had happened on July 2 and the first arrest -of a skating instructor from Bihar- was made yesterday, six days after the complaint was lodged with the police.

In recent days, a 22-year old woman was allegedly raped when she was with her friend in a car after they were forcibly driven away by four men, one of whom committed the crime. A 16-year old nun was also allegedly raped at a seminary.

M N Reddi, Additional Director General of Police (Law anad Order), has come in place of Auradkar.
