VHP extends tacit support to BJP
As the assembly election campaign heads to a crescendo in Gujarat, the VHP has extended tacit support to the BJP.
Referring to the rift in the BJP camp, the Acharya said in-fighting should be seen as going against the interest of the large Hindu community and should be done away with. An advertisement appearing across major English and Gujarati dailies on Wednesday depicting VHP’s international president Ashok Singhal seeking support on behalf of the ruling BJP, created ruffles, although the state VHP unit was quick to deny it as a gimmick with the VHP having no role to play in the affair.
The presence of Gujarat VHP president Dhayabhai Shastri, VHP leader Chinubhai Patel and Jaideep Patel alongside the Acharya in the state at the time of election is being seen as an attempt on part of the VHP to consolidate support for the BJP. No Gujarat VHP leader has come out in the open yet to lend support to Mr Modi. The VHP is believed to be divided on the grounds of lending support to the BJP, with a section of the party hurling blames at the Modi government for not protecting their interests.
