NEW DELHI: The total number of registered vehicles plying in the city rose by nearly 10 lakh in 2015-16 financial year, an increase that went hand in hand with a fall in the number of DTC buses and ridership, establishing the public transport system's further erosion.

The Delhi Statistical Handbook 2016 shows that while there were 4180 functional DTC buses in 2014-15 out of 4705, currently the operational fleet stands at 3817 with a total strength of 4352.

DTC ridership also declined from last year's 141.87 crore to 129.44 crore, with a corresponding daily average of 35.37 lakh.

Barring the state of DTC ( Delhi Transport Corporation), the latest data depicts an upward trend across categories with a total of 97.05 lakh registered vehicles as against 88.27 lakh of 2014-15.

The number of autorickshaws has rose by over 1 lakh, up from last year's 81,633. The current count of autos is 1.98 lakh while the number of taxis is 91,073 compared to last year's 79.606.

The number of total buses, which includes ambulances and mini buses, stands at 43,723. The figure was 32,540 last year.

The total number of new vehicles registered increased from last year's 5.34 lakh to 8.77 lakh while the number of two-wheelers also saw a rise of over 4 lakh, settling at 61.04 lakh.

In 2014-15, the city had 27.9 lakh registered cars and jeeps. Currently, the figure is 29.87 lakh.
