Veerappa Moily outlines advantages of N-deal
The Indo-US nuclear agreement would not impose ban on further nuclear tests nor would it affect the independence of the country's foreign policy and strategic security.
"The nuclear deal does not affect India's right to conduct further nuclear tests. It also does not mean we need to sign CTBT," Moily said while inaugurating a workshop organised here for the Congress spokespersons of southern states.
As many as 315 delegates from Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Pondichery, including PCC and DCC chiefs, attended the two-day workshop aimed at sensitising the partymen about the finer points of the nulcear deal.
Barring Moily, none of the top central leaders of the party was present at the workshop held at Andhra Pradesh Agriculture and Rural Development Institute at Rajendranagar on the city outskirts.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhar Reddy and APCC Chief D Srinivas were among the participants.
Outlining the advantages of the nuclear agreement, Moily said a long-term perspective was needed to appreciate its benefits for the country.
Poining out that the deal would help end 35-year-long nuclear isolation, he said "India has a chance to become global player in nuclear energy in 15-20 years. We cannot afford to miss this opportunity."
