Varun Gandhi supporters arrested in Pilibhit

BJP workers were arrested after they blocked roads & clashed with police.

NEW DELHI: A day after Varun Gandhi withdrew his bail plea in the Delhi High Court in a case of hate speech, BJP workers were arrested after they blocked roads and clashed with police ahead of his arrival in Pilibhit to court arrest on Saturday.

A large number of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers gathered in Pilibhit on Saturday morning waiting for Varun Gandhi to arrive and possibly get arrested for reportedly making hate speeches.

"Varun Gandhi left for Pilibhit early this morning and is expected to court arrest there by 11 in the morning," his office said.

Even though Varun's camp is expected to draw political mileage from the issue, the party's leadership seems to be averse to the idea.

Meanwhile, the leadership has sent the party's incharge of polls for Uttar Pradesh, Kalraj Mishra to Pilibhit to monitor the situation closely.

The estranged Nehru-Gandhi scion, who is making an electoral debut from Pilibhit, came in the limelight after his alleged anti-communal speeches in Uttar Pradesh's Pilibhit constituency, a seat represented by his mother Maneka Gandhi so far.

Following this, an FIR was lodged against Varun in Pilibhit on the direction of election authorities after CDs containing his anti-Muslim speeches surfaced. Varun's anticipatory bail granted by the Delhi High Court also expired yesterday.

Earlier, the Allahabad High Court had rejected the bail plea of the 29-year-old BJP leader and this was cited by his lawyer as the reason for withdrawing the bail plea from the Delhi High Court.

"Keeping in view of Allahabad High Court order, we seek to withdraw the petition," senior advocate Siddharth Luthra, appearing for Gandhi told the court on Friday.

Meanwhile, Pilibhit was put under a tight security cover. "In the wake of Varun Gandhi's visit tomorrow tight security arrangements will be made in the district and along with the local police Provincial Armed Constabulary would also be deployed," Superintendent of Police Prakash D said on Friday.
