Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee was on Friday evening admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences for a routine follow-up of his health, nearly three weeks after he was discharged from the hospital.

As per the advice of doctors, 84-year-old Vajpayee is being admitted at AIIMS for routine follow up and investigations, a release issued by the former prime minister's office said.

"He will stay in the hospital for two days during which these follow-up tests will be conducted for him," Dr D K Sharma, Medical Superintendent AIIMS, said.

Vajpayee was admitted to the AIIMS following complaints of chest infection on February 3, which was later diagnosed as pneumonia. He was kept on ventilator support as he was not able to breath on his own following the lung infection.

On March 1, doctors declared him fit to go home after about a month-long treatment during which doctors also conducted tracheostomy on him.

Tracheostomy is an operative procedure that creates surgical airway in the cervical trachea (wind pipe). In the procedure, a hole is maintained in the trachea with a pipe (tracheostomy pipe) to deliver more oxygen to the lungs.
