Vaithilingam sworn in as Puducherry Chief Minister

V Vaithilingam was today sworn in as Chief Minister of the Union Territory of Puducherry.

PUDUCHERRY: V Vaithilingam was today sworn in as Chief Minister of the Union Territory of Puducherry.Five other Congress legislators were sworn in as ministers at a function in Rajnivas here. Lt Governor Govind Singh Gurjar administered the oath of office and secrecy to Vaithilingam and others.

The five ministers are E Valsaraj, M Kandasamy, Malladi Krishna Rao, M O H F Shahjahan, all members of the previous Rangasamy Ministry and A Namassivayam, a former minister. This is 58-year old Vaithilingam's second term as Chief Minister. He had earlier headed the Congress government between 1991 and 1996.

The formation of a new ministry became necessary as N Rangasamy quit as Chief Minister on August 28 following sustained revolt by a majority of the 10 Congress legislators, including five ministers of his six-member cabinet.

Vaithilingam, representing the rural Nettapakkam constituency in the assembly, was the Industries and Power Minister in Rangasamy's Ministry.
