COIMBATORE: MDMK general secretary Vaiko today expressed displeasure over the presence of a police official from the intelligence department at his press meet here, following which the cop made a hasty retreat.

The official from Special Branch of police was standing close to the table from where Vaiko was speaking to the media and recording his speech, even as majority of reporters thought he was representing some newspaper.

However, a reporter from a Telugu TV channel became suspicious and said police should not participate in a press meet.

An infuriated Vaiko raised objection saying this was not a police state or rule.

"This is meant for press and police has no business to come and participate in the press meet. If you want, you could have recorded standing in a corner, without anybody's knowledge. That is what everybody is doing," he said.

Following this, the official made a hasty retreat. Later Vaiko said he thought the official was one among the media personnel.
