Uttarakhand Governor asks devotees to keep Ganga clean during Ardhakumbh
DEHRADUN: Uttarakhand Governor Krishna Kant Paul today appealed to devotees converging on the banks of the Ganga in Haridwar for a dip during Ardhakumbh to keep it clean and make their own contribution to the Swachh Bharat Mission.

Greeting people on the occasion of Makar Sankranti when the first snan (holy bath) of Ardhakumbh will take place, the Governor asked people to ensure that the purity and cleanliness of Ganga was maintained as it would also help greatly in making the Swachh Bharat Mission successful.

He also said that by adhering to the rules and guidelines laid by the Mela administration, the pilgrims would be able to guarantee their own convenience and safety.

Makar Sankranti has special significance in 2016 as the first "snan" of Ardh Kumbh is being held on this day.

It is an auspicious sign, he said.

The Governor observed that Indian festivals were a reflection of the country's great cultural tradition and heritage and contributed greatly to emotional unity among people, creating a feeling of brotherhood.
