SAMBHAL: A 25-year-old farmer died in Faridpur Khas village in Baniyather area after he allegedly committed suicide over a delay in getting monetary relief for his damaged crops, a district official said today.

Chandra Vijay's body was found hanging from a tree in his agricultural field yesterday, sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Sanjay Kumar said.

His family members alleged that Vijay took the extreme step over the delay in getting the relief cheque from authorities for loss of crops due to rains and hailstorms.

However, the SDM said a cheque in Vijay's name, who owned one bihga of farmland, was kept prepared but was yet to be delivered to him.

The body has been sent for post-mortem, police said.
