LUCKNOW: Mounting a fresh attack on the Narendra Modi government over demonetisation, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav today said the step would not succeed in curbing black money.

"The big ones shall escape by managing documents as none of them was sighted in the queues before banks and ATMs," he said on the sidelines of launching Samajwadi Double Fortified Salt here.

"Today, we have a government at the Centre which has caused an immense hardship to all, whether rich or poor. If you see the figures, 90 per cent of the people are facing problems due to demonetisation," said Akhilesh.

He said the Centre's dream of taking out black money from the rich was not coming true.

Akhilesh had yesterday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Parliament House in Delhi to press for releasing more funds to cooperative banks because of the cash crunch they were facing due to demonetisation.

He had also highlighted the hardships of the farmers of Uttar Pradesh due to the cash crunch.

Sources had said the meeting was a follow-up of a letter Akhilesh had written to the prime minister on the plight of the people following demonetisation.

The Chief Minister said double fortification of salt with iron and iodine will simultaneously prevent iron deficiency anaemia and iodine deficiency disorders.

In the first phase, the scheme will cover anaemia endemic areas of the state, including Meerut, Faizabad, Etawah and Hamirpur.
