LUCKNOW: Migrant workers who had been lodged in different makeshift quarantine facilities in Uttar Pradesh are now being allowed to go back to their homes in villages in different districts as their 14-day quarantine period concludes.

"Workers hailing from UP who had come from other states are now being allowed to go back to their homes. We are arranging buses for them for movement to their homes both within the district as well as outside the districts within the state. They will be sent after a health checkup certifying their fitness and will also be given a food kit to take back to their villages," additional chief secretary (home) Awanish Awasthi said adding that the ferrying of these workers has already begun.

"For people of other states that are quarantined in UP, we will see how we can arrange for their transportation," said Awasthi.

Around 1.20 lakh people are currently being housed in different quarantine facilities within the state. There are three categories- one from the state who have completed their 14 days of quarantine, one who are yet to complete the required period and then people from other states.

UP had received lakhs of migrant workers soon after the national lockdown was announced by the prime minister on March 24 as factories shut and workers, especially construction workers and other daily wage earners found themselves without money or food, desperate to go back home. Thousands from Delhi and Noida took to the streets and decided to walk hundreds of kilometres to reach home, before the UP government decided to send buses to bring them back. States were asked by the centre to lodge the workers in makeshift quarantine facilities like government schools and colleges for 14 days before letting them go to their villages.
