Welcoming India's decision to get the safeguards agreement circulated among the IAEA Board of Governors, US ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency Gregory Schulte told reporters at the Agency headquarters in Vienna that the nuke deal would ultimately strengthen global non-proliferation efforts.
"We welcome India's willingness to move forward with this historic initiative," Schulte said. "The initiative will help strengthen the global non-proliferation regime and help India meet its growing energy demands in an environmentally friendly way."
After securing IAEA approval, India must also get the clearance of the Nuclear Suppliers Group, a group of 45 states that export nuclear fuel and technology and from the US Congress.
"There is much that needs to be done," Schulte said. "We will work closely with India, our NSG partners and the US Congress to ensure that the initiative is implemented as expeditiously as possible," he added.
Both India and the US are eager to finish the deal under the tenure of US President George Bush, a point emphasized by Schulte. Bush's term ends on January 20 and his administration has pledged to work on the deal till the last working day of the President.
