US warns of terror attacks on Delhi, Mumbai
New Delhi and Mumbai are likely targets for terror attacks either before or on Independence Day.
There may be attacks by Al-Qaeda in "New Delhi and Mumbai in the days leading to the Independence Day," embassy spokesman David Kennedy told the CNN-IBN news channel. Kennedy said the information was based on intelligence inputs gathered along with the Indian government. "We have learnt that foreign terrorists may carry out attacks in or around New Delhi or Mumbai," Kennedy told the Times Now news channel.
There was no immediate confirmation from the Indian government. In a message posted on its website, the embassy warned American citizens in India to maintain a low profile.
"The embassy urges American citizens to maintain a low profile and be especially alert and attentive to their surroundings during this period.
"Likely targets include major airports, key central Indian government offices, and major gathering places such as hotels and markets," the embassy said. Serial train bombings in Mumbai on July 11 blamed by the government on Islamic militant groups killed 183 people and injured almost 900.
In India, the market sentiment suffered on the US embassy’s announcements for a short time by 80 points but recovered after an hour on strong auto demands. Thursday’s spooked bomb plot in the United Kingdom also had an impact globally. Major airlines led by British Airways cancelled their flights.
UK shares close off lows and oil bounced back after $2 slump on aircraft bomb plot. The impact was also felt on the European stocks which ended down. Britain and the United States have issued new air travel rules and there are major aviation security alerts in Britain.
